In August 2006, Jen and I were fortunate enough to be the recipients of a one-week stay at her parents' timeshare in O'ahu, Hawai'i. While most normal folk would be excited about the sun, sand and surf, I could think of only one thing I wanted to do there...

With the help of this guy's two sites (1 and 2), I was able to locate the very special address 41-505 Kalania'ole Highway, Waimanalo, HI 96795. It was absolutely surreal. Even though I couldn't actually get into the estate (where's the doorbell?), standing on the very spots where the show was filmed was worth the 3000 mile trip.

Here are some shots from the pilgrimage:

This is the main gate of the estate where the show was filmed. I don't think it's the gate they used while filming, however.
Here's the mailbox. I think the enscription in the wall means "an enclosure for turtles", which may reference the reef enclosing the bay at the back of the property.
Here's a look over the rock wall at the front of the property. You can see the dirt driveway, and also the sheets the current owners have hung, ostensibly to keep jerks like me from peering into their lives.
Well, you can't really see a whole lot from the street, so it was out for a wade through the ocean to hopefully find the bay. You know, the one Magnum's always swimming out of...here's a look (at high tide).
You have no idea how rad this felt.
Apparently, there have been quite a few incidents with crazy show fans. I decided to (mostly) obey this sign...
...mostly. Here's a look at the southernmost part of the property, from atop the fence. It's the area where, for example, Higgins would fly his remote control plane, and awaken Magnum from sleep after his "sordid" evenings.
Moving north, here's a glimpse onto the patio. That wall looks huge in the show, but it's really tiny. This place is also overgrown and run down. They need to show some freakin' respect, yo.
Adjacent to the wall/patio area is the large backyard. This is where Higgins and Magnum often had altercations, and also where TC and Rick often got bribed into working while Magnum was off on cases.
Zeus and Apollo's long-lost cousin, Bubba. Ferocious. His presence tells me someone actually lives there, even though it looks like no one's cared for the place in quite some time (other than the lawn, which, like all lawns in Hawai'i, is 3 mm high and green).
Here are the tennis courts Magnum always bargained for. Did you know that palm trees aren't native to the Hawai'ian Islands? I didn't either.
And here it is...the guesthouse! It's the northernmost spot on the property, and, like the rest of the estate, looks so much smaller in person. On the show, it's always implied that it's on the opposite side of the property.
At left, the last shot I got of the property, again the guest house. You can see the terrace Magnum enjoyed, and also the reprehensible condition of the concrete. Right after I snapped this shot, I got hit by a wave, which killed the camera. However, I quickly removed the memory card, protecting the sweet pictures of the trip!

I can't begin to explain how cool this experience was. We were also lucky enough to have dinner at the King Kamehameha Club (also known as the Outrigger Canoe Club) and to drive by the home of Island Hoppers. Viva Magnum!
